On 6th November, 2025, the Grand Finale Gala of the “Leaders of Innovation in Pomerania and Kuyavia 2025” competition took place in Toruń, honoring the region’s best scientific and technological achievements.
The Special Award of the Rector of Bydgoszcz University of Technology, “Innovator PBS,” was presented to a research team from the Faculty of Medicine at Bydgoszcz University of Technology, led by Assoc. Prof. Krzysztof Szweda, MD, from the Department of Basic Research. The team, conducting research on obesity in collaboration with scientists from Harvard Medical School, was recognized for their innovative project: “Neurotechnology Against Obesity: Intelligent Brain Maps as a Tool for the Medicine of the Future.”
This groundbreaking and globally unique innovation is the first to combine explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) with advanced neuroimaging to improve obesity treatment outcomes. The project resulted in two intelligent brain maps:
-
the first identifies areas critical for long-term therapy success,
-
the second highlights structures sensitive to inflammation, enabling precisely targeted interventions.
The expected outcomes include significantly improved therapy effectiveness through personalized treatment. These tools will allow physicians to more accurately qualify patients and design individualized interventions, shifting the focus from symptom management to treating the underlying causes. The team also received a distinction in the competition in the category Research Unit/Research Team.
Additionally, the certificate “Innovative Regional Brand InnoMaRe – Made in Kuyavian-Pomeranian” was awarded to the University’s Materials and Structures Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, led by Prof. Stanisław Mrozinski.
Congratulations to all the award winners on their remarkable achievements!
